LUCY TURNER
We got the pleasure to do an interview with Lucy Turner, who is a participant in our Dig Deep Program. We explored why she wanted to take part in the Dig Deep Program, what is her new business and how she has found building her business.
Can you introduce yourself, your name and what you do?
Hi, my name is lucy and I am a graphic designer based in Belfast. I recently graduated in graphic design and I work mainly on graphics, illustration and hand lettering projects.
Why did you wanna take part in dig deep?
After graduating in the middle of 2020 I felt lost about the next stages of my life and how I was going to use my degree. I had just been placed on furlough in my hospitality job and I knew it was the right time to think about going freelance and start making steps to make this happen. I found the course online and took the chance and got in!
What is your new business?
My business is creating wedding stationery and I also work on other graphic design work and illustration. I'm currently working on some hand-lettered place cards and other small pieces but my goal for the end of this year is to be able to offer full wedding stationery to my clients.
What is your biggest hurdle?
Imposter syndrome! I always have fear of showing my work online and I've always been self-deprecating when it comes to things I make. Being in this programme has been so great at helping me build my confidence and show up online. There has been a massive amount of support from the other women in the programme and has built a community of people who are so encouraging to one another. I'd like to say this is currently my biggest hurdle but definitely something I'm getting better at with this support.
What influences and motivates you?
I have a lot of other designers and artists who influence my work but my friends and family are my biggest motivators. I am lucky to have such a great support system but couldn't be more grateful to everyone who has answered multiple texts of “does this colour work with this” or “does this font look weird to you” texts at all hours.
What things are you going to implement in your business in 2021?
Less imposter syndrome and more just going for it. If the past year has taught me anything it's to make things work for you and take chances on yourself.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Don't compare yourself to others and take your time! I graduated when I was 26 and I was reluctant to go back into studying because it had been so long but it was the right time for me. Work at your own pace and enjoy it.
