JENNY PATTERSON
We got the pleasure to do an interview with Jenny Patterson, who is a participant in our Dig Deep Program. We explored why she wanted to take part in the Dig Deep Program, her new business and how she has found building her business.
Can you introduce yourself - your name and what you do?
Hi, I am Jenny and I am a Graphic Designer and Illustrator.
Why did you want to take part in the Dig Deep Programme?
I wanted to take my freelance Graphic Design business full time. Dig Deep popped up at the perfect time and seemed the ideal solution to getting the help and support I needed. I was so excited!
What is the new business that you have been developing?
A Graphic Design and Illustration agency that focuses on creating environmentally sustainable design solutions.
What has been your biggest hurdle since you started your business?
Something I found difficult was actually talking about my work and telling people about what I do. It’s not something I was used to! Another hurdle has been maintaining motivation and continuing to push on with my goals, especially through the dark winter months. Sharing my goals with the Dig Deep group each week has really helped to keep them in the front of my mind.
How do you see your business developing in the future?
It’s my goal to work with more environmental charities and local groups and to make a positive impact on the local community of Belfast and wider Northern Ireland.
What misconceptions did you have about starting your own business?
I don’t think I had any specific misconceptions, I have definitely taken a leap of faith and gone into it with a completely open mind.
What have you learnt about yourself since starting the programme?
I have learnt that I am quite resourceful and not afraid to ask for help, which is really important when starting a business!
What/who influences/motivates you?
David Attenborough has had a huge influence on me with his messages relating to climate change. More recently the Dig Deep group has been so motivational and inspiring, it’s lovely to have a support network of like-minded people who face the same obstacles as you.
What has been your biggest accomplishment so far since starting your business?
Getting really positive client feedback on my first solo full branding project. It was a great confidence boost.
What have you learnt about your business in the last 3 months?
I have learnt that you get out of it what you put in. In other words, the more effort I put into my business, the more reward I receive. If I have a lazy day, so does my business and keeping that in mind really pushes me to continue on.
What things are you going to implement in your business in 2021?
I am setting up an online shop for my illustration artwork and launching my new branding so watch this space!
What advice would you give your younger self?
I would tell her to be more decisive and confident!
