Design Our Future… What do you think our next story should be?
This workshop will focus on book design and storytelling. There will be a brief introduction to the different stages of book making. This will include brainstorming ideas, storyboarding, weaving text and images together, dummy book making and the process of working on a final book itself. The workshop will have a particular focus on storyboarding; a fun and vital part of the design process behind creating a book. You will then have the choice of either taking these designs through to a mocked up book or generating a sample piece of artwork.
With Future Heritage being the theme of Belfast Design Week this year and it being the European Year of Cultural Heritage, who better to design our future than the next generation?
Bio
Gemma is an illustrator/author from the Causeway Coast. She graduated from Falmouth University in 2011 with a BA (Hons) Degree in Illustration. She also graduated with her first authored and illustrated picture book deal after visiting the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, London Book Fair and New York during her final year of study. Her books have now been published globally and been nominated for numerous awards, such as the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal, Dundee Picture Book Award and Coventry Inspiration Book Awards.
She originally specialised in writing and illustrating children’s books, but has been actively broadening the scope of her portfolio in recent years. Her Causeway Coast roots have always been of huge inspiration in terms of mark making, colour and the natural theme within her work and she’s currently finishing a large body of work based on the theme, supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s Lottery Funds. Gemma is also working on several new book ideas, running her own print business and is currently a judge in the Tourism Northern Ireland Young Travel Writers Competition.
This workshop is funded by Belfast City Council as part of a project to encourage more women to seek careers in the design industry so is just for girls aged 10 – 14 years
