Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your business?

Hi everyone!

I'm Caitie, a freelance illustrator based in Bangor. My work primarily focuses on the Food & Beverage industry, where I specialise in packaging and editorial projects. Currently, I'm pursuing an MA in Illustration at Kingston School of Art, which has led me to explore themes of Irish folklore and the history of storytelling. I find immense joy in blending these two areas of interest in my work! I offer digital illustrations that vividly bring brands and stories to life.

Why did you decide to start your own business?

I began my career as a graphic designer within the F&B industry. While I loved the experience, I wanted the opportunity to incorporate more context and depth into my work. I have a passion for research and focusing on the intricacies of design. Living in London at the time, I realized it was time to return home, so I left my role and ventured into the world of freelance!

Can you tell us about a typical day in your business? Are there any routines you follow each day?

I am currently set up in my lovely home studio but will soon be moving into a new space, which is very exciting! My day usually starts with some meditation to focus myself, then I work on a mix of freelance and personal projects, marketing, and dreaded finances. Binky, my little cat, usually comes to keep me company around lunchtime.

Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would have done differently when you were first starting out? Are there any particular challenges you had to overcome?

I've had a very roundabout way of getting to where I am. I originally studied architecture, then went into graphic design, and have now finally landed in illustration. Looking back, I wish I had trusted my gut and pursued illustration earlier in my career, but it’s easy to say that in hindsight! I wouldn’t trade the experiences I had and the people I met along the way for anything.

What do you love most about working for yourself?

Being able to set my own hours and location and choose the projects I take on is such a lovely part of the job. I love traveling and being able to embark on adventures to gain inspiration and new experiences without worrying too much about holiday time is wonderful.

What do you find most challenging about working for yourself?

I always hit a mid-afternoon slump around 3 pm and find myself gazing around. Staying motivated throughout the day and not losing my flow can be very tricky.

Any advice for other women starting their own creative business?

Make sure you have a support network to lean on. It’s easy to feel daunted by finances, taxes, copyright, and other areas outside your creative field. If you have friends who know more about these areas, don’t be afraid to ask for help. You can always return the favor in the future.

Where do you see yourself and your business in 5 years?

My work is deeply connected to community, nature, and the climate. I would love to work on community collaboration projects, facilitate workshops, and connect people to food and nature through art—something to get me out of my studio!

What do you enjoy outside your creative work?

Since moving back to Northern Ireland, I've spent most of my time sea swimming, enjoying time with my family, and making new friends and connections in the city! I love yoga and meditation, so when it's too stormy for swimming, that's what you’ll find me doing :)

Anything else you would like to share? New projects or work?

I’m currently busy setting up my new studio space, which I can’t wait to share once it’s ready! I’ve also launched some prints on my online shop, with more collections coming soon, so keep an eye on my website for new products.
