We got the pleasure to do an interview with Dena Yakout, who is a participant in our Dig Deep Program. We explored why she wanted to take part in the Dig Deep Program, what is her new business and how she has found building her business.

 Can you introduce yourself - your name and what you do?

 My name is Dena and I manage a lifestyle brand called Ancient Naturals.

Why did you want to take part in the Dig Deep Programme?

I feel like the Dig Deep programme will give me the guidance and support I need to keep on top of my startup. I love sharing knowledge and resources and learning from other like-minded females is very helpful. 

What is the new business that you have been developing?

 Our mission is to provide alternative mystical wares and all-natural handmade skin and hair care products. Ancient naturals promote living a self-sustainable and non-toxic lifestyle. 

What has been your biggest hurdle since you started your business?

 The biggest hurdle for me so far would be trying to attract a customer base with little content and products however now as my product line grows so has my audience. 

How do you see your business developing in the future?

Starting a business takes a lot of time and energy and results don’t always appear right away. I have to remind myself that the work I’m putting in will pay off in the future. 

What have you learnt about yourself since starting the programme?

I have learnt to stick to my gut and enjoy the process as much as possible. Developing a go with the flow attitude allows me to not stress under pressure and keeps me motivated and calm. 

What/who influences/motivates you?

One of my big influences would be @animamundiherbals which is run by a herbalist named Adriana Ayales. Her motto is to "‘bridge ancient remedies to the modern world’ and this is similar to my brand mission. Her branding and product line inspires my work as I also use all-natural products when it comes to my handmade items and to have a certain aesthetic when it comes to my socials and website. 

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far since starting your business?

 My biggest accomplishment has been learning how to take professional photos of my product line after completing a course in photography. This has helped by keeping my brand looking fresh and attracting new customers. My following has tripled in the last two weeks thanks to the clean visuals and promo techniques. 

What have you learnt about your business in the last 3 months?

In the last three months, I have learnt which audiences to target to make the biggest impact. In 2021 I’ll be focusing on social media engagement to grow my customer base.

What advice would you give your younger self?

To my younger self-, anything is possible if you just have the passion and time. Stick to what feels right for you.
